Lake Placid, New York – The United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation is proud to announce its nominations of nine athletes in the sport of men’s bobsled to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) for consideration to the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy. The United States will look to equal or even improve on its two-medal performance from the Salt Lake City Games when the American team medaled for the first time in 46 years by claiming silver and bronze in the four-man.
The nine men nominated to the team are 2002 4-man Olympic Silver Medalist Todd Hays (Del Rio, TX), Pavle Jovanovic (Tom’s River, NJ), 2002 Olympian Steve Mesler (Buffalo, NY), Brock Kreitzburg (Akron, OH), Steve Holcomb (Park City, UT), 2002 4-man Olympic Silver Medalist Bill Schuffenhauer (Salt Lake City, UT), Curt Tomasevicz (Shelby, NE), ;D [glow=red,2,300]Lorenzo Smith III [/glow](Kankakee, IL- USMA Class of 2000) and 2002 4-man Olympic Silver Medalist Randy Jones (Atlanta, GA). Drivers Hays and Holcomb are ranked first and seventh respectively in the two-man, second and ninth in the four-man and first and seventh in the overall combined World Cup rankings.
The United States team earned the maximum of two sleds in the Games based on World Cup results. 2002 4-man Olympic Silver Medalist Randy Jones will be making his fourth trip to the Games and trails only five time Olympian Brian Shimer (Naples, FL) for the most appearances representing the United States in competition in the sport of bobsledding as an athlete. Todd Hays will be making his third consecutive trip to the Games while Bill Schuffenhauer and Steve Mesler will be making their second straight Olympic appearances. Hays will be looking to medal for the second straight Games after winning the silver in the four-man just four years ago. In 2002 Hays also competed in the two-man and just missed the medal as he and 2002 4-man Olympic Silver Medalist Garrett Hines (Atlanta, GA) finished in fourth. Making their Olympic debuts will be Pavle Jovanovic, Brock Kreitzburg, Steve Holcomb, Curt Tomasevicz and Lorenzo Smith III.
Mike Kohn (Chantilly, VA) the 2002 Olympic 4-man Bronze Medalist and Jason Ross (Napoleon, MI) are being nominated as replacements athletes if any of the above athletes are unable for any reason to go to the Games.
All local and national media will have the opportunity to speak to the athletes during the week of January 16th-20th via teleconference from Europe. With the teams competing overseas and traveling to the next World Cup race in St. Moritz, Switzerland having a teleconference this weekend was not possible. Stay tuned for dates, times and numbers for the teleconference call.
